Transfer Vehicle & Crew Levels
We assess each patient's clinical condition and dispatch the appropriate vehicle and crew — ensuring the right level of care without unnecessary cost or delay.
Crew: BLS + ILS
A BLS ambulance is crewed by a Basic Life Support practitioner and an Intermediate Life Support practitioner. Appropriate for stable, low-acuity patients who require monitoring and safe transport but no advanced intervention.
Suitable For
- Stable post-operative patients
- Rehabilitation facility transfers
- Routine outpatient transport
- Low-risk mental health transfers
- Step-down care
Crew: BLS + ILS
An ILS ambulance is crewed by a Basic Life Support practitioner and an Intermediate Life Support practitioner with an enhanced equipment and pharmacological scope. Suited to moderate-acuity patients requiring IV access, continuous monitoring, or a broader clinical intervention range.
Suitable For
- Post-cardiac procedure transport
- Haemodynamically stable ICU step-down
- IV therapy-dependent patients
- Paediatric transfers (stable)
- Obstetric transfers (low-risk)
Crew: ILS + ALS
An ALS ambulance is crewed by an Intermediate Life Support practitioner and an Advanced Life Support paramedic. Required for high-acuity patients on vasoactive infusions, ventilator support, or with a high risk of deterioration in transit.
Suitable For
- Ventilated / intubated patients
- Active vasopressor infusions
- Unstable cardiac or neurological patients
- Neonatal and paediatric ICU
- Post-resuscitation transfers
The Transfer Process
From initial request to safe handover, every step is documented and clinically supervised.
Transfer Request
The referring facility contacts our control centre by phone or WhatsApp. We collect patient demographics, clinical summary, vital signs, current interventions, and the receiving facility's details.
Clinical Assessment & Crew Allocation
Our duty supervisor reviews the clinical information and dispatches the appropriate vehicle level (BLS, ILS, or ALS). Estimated crew arrival time is confirmed with the referring unit.
Crew Arrival & Patient Handover
The crew performs a structured clinical handover with the referring team and reviews all documentation. The patient is assessed, connected to on-board monitoring, and prepared for transport.
En-Route Clinical Care
Continuous monitoring throughout the journey. Interventions are performed as clinically indicated within the crew's HPCSA scope of practice, and the receiving facility is pre-alerted with an ETA and clinical update.
Arrival Handover & Documentation
A full structured handover is performed with the receiving clinical team. Medi Edge provides a completed Patient Report Form (PRF) with all vitals, interventions, medications administered, and clinical observations in line with HPCSA documentation standards.
Types of Transfers We Facilitate
ICU-to-ICU Transfers
High-dependency patients on ventilators, vasopressors, or multiple infusions moving between intensive care units. ALS vehicle with ILS and ALS crew required.
Post-Surgical Transport
Stable post-operative patients requiring monitored transport from theatre recovery to ward, step-down, or home facility.
Cardiac Patient Transfers
STEMI patients post-catheterisation, post-CABG, or awaiting specialist intervention at a tertiary facility.
Neonatal & Paediatric
Specialised transport for critically ill neonates and children, with age-appropriate equipment and ALS-level practitioners experienced in paediatric care.
Psychiatric Transfers
Dignified and safe transport for psychiatric patients between acute and long-term care facilities, with appropriate clinical oversight.
Repatriation & Long-Distance
Extended-distance transfers across Gauteng and beyond, including coordinated multi-leg transfers for repatriation from remote or rural hospitals.
