Step-by-Step Adult CPR
Interactive guide using latest 2020 AHA standards with audible feedback and cycle tracking. For educational purposes only — always call EMS first.
Check Scene Safety
Ensure the scene is safe for you and the patient before approaching.
Check Responsiveness & Breathing
Tap shoulders firmly. Shout: 'Are you okay?' Check for breathing (no more than 10 seconds).
Call EMS & Get AED
Call 087 183 1129 immediately. Send someone to get an AED or use speaker phone.
Begin 30 Chest Compressions
Heel of hand on centre of chest. Arms straight. Push hard and fast 2-2.4 inches deep. Rate: 100-120/min. Audible metronome provided.
Open Airway & Assess Comfort
Head-tilt chin-lift. If trained and comfortable: give 2 rescue breaths. Otherwise: continue compressions only (Hands-Only CPR).
Complete CPR Cycles
Repeat 30:2 (or compressions-only) for 5 complete cycles (~2 minutes). Then check pulse briefly.
Check Pulse After 5 Cycles
Feel carotid pulse for 5-10 seconds. If pulse present and breathing: place in recovery position. If not: resume CPR immediately.
Use AED When Available
Power on, attach pads as shown, stand clear, deliver shock if advised. Resume CPR immediately after.

CPR Cycle Progress
🔊 AUDIBLE METRONOME: Listen for beeps — push with each sound
compressions / 30
Push HARD and FAST — 100–120 compressions per minute
Depth: 2-2.4 inches (5-6 cm) • Let chest recoil completely
Ready for Rescue Breaths?
Only give rescue breaths if you:
- ✓ Are trained in rescue breathing
- ✓ Feel comfortable (know the person or prepared)
- ✓ Are willing to accept risk of bodily fluid exposure
⚠️ DISEASE RISK: Rescue breaths involve exposure to saliva and respiratory secretions. If unsure, Hands-Only CPR is equally effective.
Pinch nose • Create seal • Breathe over 1 second • Watch chest rise
rescue breaths remaining
Check for Pulse
Place 2 fingers on carotid artery (neck, beside windpipe). Feel for pulse for 5-10 seconds.
Place in Recovery Position
Patient has pulse and is breathing:
- 1. Tilt head back to open airway
- 2. Roll patient onto left side
- 3. Bend left arm under head
- 4. Position right leg bent for stability
- 5. Monitor breathing and pulse continuously
