Score Interpretation

7–10

Normal / Reassuring

Routine care. Dry, warm, stimulate.

4–6

Moderate Concern

Stimulate, provide O₂, reassess. Prepare for resuscitation.

0–3

Immediate Action Required

Begin neonatal resuscitation. Warmth, airway, PPV.

NRP Initial Steps

  1. Warm and dry — place under radiant warmer
  2. Position airway — slight neck extension ("sniffing" position)
  3. Clear airway — suction mouth then nose if secretions
  4. Stimulate — rub back, flick soles
  5. Assess HR, respirations, colour
  6. If HR <100 or apnoeic → PPV at 40–60/min
  7. If HR <60 after 30s PPV → CPR (3:1 ratio)
  8. If HR <60 after CPR → adrenaline 0.01–0.03 mg/kg IV
